Successes/Blessings:
- I harvested beets. This is the last of my Spring harvest of beets. I’ll replant for a Fall harvest. I made balsamic glazed roasted beets, and I haven’t decided what I want to do with the greens yet. I’ll be bringing some of them to my husband’s uncle who has been teaching me beekeeping. He mentioned last week that he loves the greens as much as the root. It’s the least I can do to thank him for his time and wisdom!
- The kids picked some strawberries out of our small strawberry box. They nibbled them while they played outside and we also had some with lunch a couple of days.
- I got a great deal on some disposable diapers at CVS. They’re in cloth most of the time, but we use sposies at night and if we’re going out.
- I hung almost all of the laundry on my homesteader drying rack (watch in the next few days for further information and a coupon code!).
- I made 7 pints of mulberry jam with mulberries gleaned from my husband’s uncle.
- I got several quarts of fresh strawberries from my sister (a friend gave them to her, and she couldn’t use them all before they went bad). I’ll make jam and freeze some.
- We haven’t had a need to turn on the air conditioning yet this year. I’m loving the low utility bills!
- I sold 7 home school books on the Used Curriculum Blog Hop. The money from these sales will go toward purchasing curriculum for next year.
- I used a coupon code to save $20 on the purchase of beehives (!!!). You read that right! My husband’s uncle split one of his hives so that I could start my own colony last week. So exciting! I will post more about this soon. I’m a total newbee, so I won’t be posting any tip or tutorial type posts, but I’ll keep you guys posted on our progress anyway.
- I mulched my garden with the boat load of packing paper that came with my bee supplies order from Mann Lake, LTD. We put down a few loads of wood chip mulch, but I didn’t have paper at the time to put under the wood chips to completely kill the weeds. So while we aren’t have as much of a weed problem, it’s still there.
Goals:
- Spend 20-30 minutes per day in the garden (at least).
- Harvest some baby kale for salads. My lettuce isn’t growing very fast for some reason.
- See if there is a facebook garage sale group for my city. I don’t want to go through the trouble of setting up my own garage sale, but I wouldn’t mind posting things on a FB group. I don’t have a personal FB page, but I did set one up for the blog.
- Transplant carrots, lettuce, kale, and … something else. Can’t remember right now. This stuff is all planted in peat pellets right now and ready for transplant. I just need to get out there and find room.

This week we found that we had reached the limits of our bandwidth so we made a few trips to the library to borrow DVDs. (Last month we decided to cancel our cable package and signed up for Netflicks, but I guess we’re learning how much bandwidth that takes.) I made all meals from scratch except for dinner on Friday night when we had veggie burgers in the park (busy day!) I picked, hulled and froze 25+ lbs of strawberries. We picked and washed several handfuls of lettuce from our community garden patch and spent some time weeding it (so much more to do!) I planned our weeks meals based on things I have on hand in the freezer and pantry, the weekly flyer sales and used a couple coupons I have (couponing is not as easy to do in Canada). I made bread and purchased milk to make another batch of yogurt (I make 4 L of yogurt which lasts us about a month). Only lost a few carrots which I found had gone black and mouldy on me when I cleaned out the fridge.
We’ve barely needed our A/C, too. It’s been fantastic!
I made several salads with mesclun and baby Romaine harvested from my garden this week, and just picked the first sugar snap peas today.
We have been eating a big salad almost everyday and half of them consist of lettuce from my deck rail planters (the hubs likes the crunch of ice burg, so we buy one head a week). I was line drying everything until the rain came and we installed ceiling fans in all of our bedrooms. Hopefully, we can remain A/C free.
Good luck with the hive. I would love to see more pictures!
